Why Everyone Needs Oral Cancer Screening

Our dentist in Haworth knows how important early cancer detection is for our patients. That’s why oral cancer screening is a regular part of every checkup at Gentle Dentistry.

Every year in the United States, over 50 thousand people will be diagnosed with oral cancer. Unfortunately, only about six in ten of these people will survive for five years following their diagnosis.

As with other types of cancer, early detection is crucial for people who have oral cancer. In fact, discovering cancer in its early stages will dramatically increase a patient’s chances of survival.

We often associate oral cancer with unhealthy habits such as tobacco use and excessive drinking. It’s true that these two factors will dramatically increase a patient’s chances of contracting oral cancer, but everyone is susceptible to this deadly disease. In fact, a significant portion of the people who get oral cancer aren’t smokers or drinkers. Oral cancer affects all types of people, young people, older people, and people from various backgrounds.

Fast and Painless Cancer Screening

Cancer screening at Gentle Dentistry is fast and painless, but it could save your life. In less than five minutes, Dr. Spector will examine your head and oral cavity. While checking for oral cancer, Dr. Spector will check your lips, cheeks, gums, larynx, tongue, and soft palate for unusual growths or lesions. Dr. Spector will also examine your head, neck, and the area beneath and around your jaw for any unusual masses of tissue. If Dr. Spector notices anything out of the ordinary, we’ll refer you to the appropriate specialist right away.

Things to Watch for

Early detection is the best defense against oral cancer. That’s why you should contact our office right away if you notice any of the following symptoms:

  • Any sore, lesion, or discolored area in the oral cavity that does not heal within 14 days
  • A lump that you can feel in any part of the head, neck, or oral cavity
  • Ongoing oral pain or discomfort that occurs while you’re eating, chewing, swallowing, or speaking

Most of these issues can turn out to be completely benign, but consulting with your dentist will help reassure you and give you peace of mind. It’s important to note that the only way to accurately diagnose oral cancer is through a laboratory report.
