sedation-dentistryExplore the Dental Implant Process at Our Haworth, NJ Practice

People who are missing teeth often underestimate the ease with which dental implants can restore health and beauty to their smile. In just a few short visits to Gentle Dentistry, you can leave with a gorgeous and functional new smile.

Dr. Spector and his team work to make your dental implant experience as comfortable and efficient as possible from start to finish. Every step is performed right here at our office, and it all starts with your dental implant consultation.

Your Initial Consultation

Your consultation with Dr. Spector is your opportunity to ask any questions you have about dental implants, learn about the available treatment options, and find out how you’ll benefit from a fully restored smile. By the end of this consultation, you should have the information you need to decide whether dental implants are the right choice for you.

During this appointment, Dr. Spector will also examine and take detailed images of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. This information will help him determine which dental implant solution is right for you and create your treatment plan.

Your Customized Treatment Plan

The success of your dental implants depends on a well-planned procedure. Dr. Spector will use the information gathered at your consultation to create a treatment plan that’s customized to your individual needs and goals.

The key to your plan is in the highly-detailed 3-D images taken during your initial consultation, using our cone beam scanner. This special X-Ray machine creates 3-D images of soft tissue, dental structures, bones, and nerve paths so Dr. Spector can determine the ideal placement for your implants. This high level of precision helps ensure a successful outcome and healthy, secure implants that can last a lifetime with proper care.

The Placement of Your Implants and Restorations

Although some people are ready to have their implants placed right away, others will benefit from a supplemental procedure, such as gum disease treatment or bone grafting, to prepare their mouth for implants. Once you and Dr. Spector agree on the treatment plan and any preliminary treatments have been completed, you’ll visit us to have your implants placed.

Once your mouth has fully healed and the implant has bonded with your jawbone, you’ll return to our office to have your implant restoration attached. With your single crown, multi-tooth bridge, or full arch denture in place, you’ll leave this appointment with a fully restored smile that you’ll feel confident showing to the world.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

How Long Will My Implants Last?

The answer to this will depend on a number of factors. Unlike dentures or bridges, which can last about 10 years before they need replacing, dental implants can last for many decades if cared for properly.

Factors that could limit the life of your implants are poor oral hygiene habits, chewing on the implant site before it’s properly healed, smoking, excessive drinking, diabetes, and uncontrolled gum disease. The bottom line is that if you take proper care of your dental implants, your smile will stay healthy and beautiful for many years to come.

How long will it take to receive my dental implant?

This depends on the patient and their oral health. Some patients may require supplemental procedures like bone grafting or soft tissue augmentation. If such procedures are necessary, your overall treatment time is likely to be extended. However, the implant process typically takes three to six months to complete.

Does The Dental Implant Procedure Hurt?

Every person is different and the amount of discomfort felt during the dental implant placement procedure will largely depend on your individual pain tolerance. We prioritize your comfort throughout the procedure, and any pain can usually be well-controlled with local and general anesthesia.

After the procedure, most patients report that the small amount of pain they feel is easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Overall, most patients report that the level of pain they experience is no worse than a simple tooth extraction.

How Do I Care For My Dental Implants?

While you are healing from dental implant placement, you should be especially careful to protect the implant site. The first 48 hours are the most pivotal and you should continue to follow all post-operative instructions for the first two weeks.

Once the initial healing period is complete, dental implants require no extra maintenance and can be cared for just as you would your natural teeth. You should brush and floss every day, visit us for check-ups, and use a high-quality mouthwash to keep your teeth clean and healthy.

During your regular dental check-ups, we’ll clean your implants along with your natural teeth. Between check-ups, you should keep a close eye on your teeth and gums, and report any abnormalities to Dr. Spector immediately.
