Bone Grafting in Haworth, NJ

Your jawbone is the foundation for your teeth, so it’s essential that it remains strong and stable. If your jawbone is misaligned or becomes weak, your teeth can start to shift or develop other issues.

If you’re in need of dental work and your jawbone is weak, Dr. Spector may need to restore it with a bone grafting procedure.

What is Bone Grafting?

When a bone like the jawbone is weak or damaged, bone grafting is used to restore it. In order to do this, Dr. Borham will use part of a different bone and attach it to the damaged bone. Sometimes a piece of a bone from a different part of your body will be used to restore the weak bone, but usually your doctor will synthetically create a piece of bone to use.

When Is Bone Grafting Necessary?

Bone grafting is used for a variety of purposes and on different bones in your body. Specialists use this procedure to generate bone growth, strengthen weakened bone caused by disease or injury, or heal bone around an implant.

Here at Gentle Dentistry, we use bone grafting to encourage healthy bone growth around dental implants. Patients with deteriorated jawbones or low jawbone density may need to receive this treatment to ensure their dental implants function properly and last a lifetime.

The Bone Grafting Process

One of the most important parts of the bone grafting process is the initial consultation. This is when Dr. Spector will thoroughly examine your jawbone and gums in order to decide what necessary preparation will need to be done before you receive dental implants. This is a great time to ask any questions you might have about bone grafting or even dental implants.

During your next appointment, Dr. Spector will attach the necessary piece of bone to your jawbone. He’ll do this by creating a small incision in your gums and secure the new bone to your existing bone using connecting pieces

For your comfort, you’ll be administered a form of anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain. Since you’ll be unconscious during the procedure, our well-trained staff will be monitoring you the entire time to make sure the process goes smoothly.

After You Receive A Bone Graft

Once the bone grafting procedure is completed, it may take months for the bone to heal. If it’s not fully healed before Dr. Spector places your implant, problems may occur. You’ll be told to rest and ice your mouth as necessary to ensure it heals properly.

After the bone graft is healed, we’ll re-evaluate the surgical site to ensure it’s strong enough for a dental implant to be secured. By placing dental implants in your jaw, your jawbone will begin to grow stronger thanks to osseointegration.
